Pardon the pun there, but we're pretty excited around here!
Well, by we… I mean mostly Sam, Sophie and I. Yesterday a rather large delivery from Betterbee arrived at our doorstep! A good bit of everything I need to get two hives setup for the BEES arriving sometime in the next few weeks. Oh. My. It's all really happening! As we unpacked the boxes the little kids wanted to know what each tool was used for and what everything was.
Funny thing about bee suits, everyone wants to try it on, even the biggest kid of them all.
I've been attending bee school for the last few weeks offered by the local Bee Association. I've met a great group of people and plan to attend the monthly meetings and workshops they offer when Bee School is finished.
I have two hives to build and paint in the next few weeks, and then it's waiting for the bees to arrive! Which is both exciting and completely nerve wracking. Sam has offered to be my assistant for the summer, the gear above is actually his. He's always been very calm and kindhearted with any sort of insect, even stinging ones, so I'm glad to have him out there with me when we coax two boxes of 10,000 bees into their new homes. (yes, that's 20,000 total!)
You know I'll have pictures to share with you for sure!
Happy first day of spring everyone!
xo,

Oh, how exciting! George and I would love to keep bees but since we think we might move in the next year or so we are holding off. (This is also why we don’t yet have chickens.) If we land somewhere near my parents, I may have to call on you for local beekeeping advice! xo

I can’t wait to hear all about and see your bees. We have a ‘wild’ hive that lives in an old oak tree behind the house, but I have been wanting to have my own bee boxes, I am allergic so I am still working on my Mike to not worry and give the okay.

Anxious here too. I’ve wanted to do this since we lived in Wisconsin. I can’t really believe it’s all happening! I’m hoping to be able to harvest a tiny bit of honey this fall, and I will certainly send you some!

Thank you! We’re really *so* excited! And aren’t they just too silly? They typically do not let me take pictures like this for the blog. I got a real kick out of it 🙂

There are people in the bee association that are allergic and still keep bees. Wow, right? My husband had a very scary reaction to (we think) a wasp bite in Louisiana. I made him get tested before we decided on the bees. He is not allergic to honey bees, but is to yellow jackets. He will not be dealing with them any time soon and we do have two epi-pens just in case. Always good to be safe!

It's going to be fun for sure. Ordered a bee suit for the little ones to share, so once I'm comfortable out there they can check it out too. Full suit and gloves for them! Just jacket/veils & gloves for Sam & I. I can't believe it's really finally happening!

I can't wait. I ordered a "wee bee suit" for my younger kiddos & it arrived just yesterday. Full body protection for the littlest in the bunch…… It's so cute! And I feel good knowing they can safely watch when I check on the bees 🙂
