slowly…….

My Aunt said she wanted to see some inside pictures of the house. This mostly means she wants to see my new kitchen. My Aunt & I are kindred spirits in this way. Food is love….

So really, these are for her.

The glass french doors lead into a quirky little space that leads to the bathroom on the left and the in-law suite on the right. Yes. An in-law suite. That is a whole other blog post though. The  doors to the left in the last kitchen photo lead into the dining room (or what will be the dining room….. soon). The basement had one old bar stool in it, I’ll be looking for some more over the summer. I hope to eventually have five or six mismatched stools like that for the island. Speaking of the island, do you see the glass front doors that open? Root veggie storage. There is so much to love in that space. Really, really. I just wish you could all come over for coffee and muffins.

Off of the den, which I’ll share another time, is the sun-room. I know Aunt Lori will want to see that too. It is quickly becoming my favorite room in the house. The beams, the windows, the light. Love. We’ll just overlook those boxes for now…

Speaking of which, we’re in piles boxes here people. And because each room needs a good scrub, moving in has been going very slowly. Sometimes I wish my neat freak tendencies weren’t so loud….. but especially when it comes to the kids rooms, I have to clean it all. Right down to dismantling the baseboard heating and vacuuming out all the dust bunnies. By the way, a small handheld broom works wonderful for brushing those grates/fans and getting them super clean. Also, Valspar makes a color called dust bunny…… who wants to paint anything that color? I’ve never looked at dust and thought oh, how very pretty. But maybe that’s just me.

So it’s going. Slowly. Last week while Joe was here we mostly hung out and tended to minor house emergencies. Leaky faucets and such. And we unloaded the truck. And cleaned. And did I mention that the previous owners left tons of stuff here? Some of it is awesome. As in, stoneware crocks and bowls that I adore. A red leather chair that Joe is smitten with. Some if it just needs to be donated though….. so we’ve been decluttering too. Joe flew back to Louisiana on Monday and will be there for a few weeks to finish up work before he officially transfers/departs. He’ll be here mid June and my goal is to have the bulk of the unpacking done so that we can hang out while he’s on leave. (leave = vacation time for you non military folks) I want to hang up art and go to farmer’s markets while he has time off….. not figure out where to put the silverware. You know?

And speaking of where to put things….. doesn’t it take forever? The kitchen is always the hardest. Figuring out where things should live to make it all flow….. I moved things several times in the past week but I finally got it. I think. As I unpacked I thought of all the kitchens some of my things have seen. My kitchenaid mixer for example was purchased in Cape Cod over a decade ago. It’s been to Alaska, Wisconsin, Louisiana, and now here to Massachusetts. It’s lived in seven different houses. Sort of crazy, right?

Well, I’m off to start painting the little one’s room. I talked them out of cobalt blue and into a lovely shade of pear green. Mama-Jedi mind tricks I tell you…..

  3. What a gem! Love the kitchen! And the floors! But I totally understand the scrubbing…it’s like I don’t want any dust that wasn’t ours anywhere when I move in somewhere. I totally get it. Hugs to you, it’s not fun, but it’s worth it!

  5. THE KITCHEN IS AWESOME!!!!! I am in love with your home and I have not seen all of it yet. I am so happy for you. OH I LOVE THE KITCHEN!!! The meals that will be cooked it that room. I can smell the food and hear the laughter that will be coming from that room. Yes mixed matched stools will be perfect. Excited to see the dinning room set up. The sun room is beautiful too. I see many hours of peaceful time there. I am so happy for you. I can not imagine a color called dust bunnies. If I wanted that color I just wouldn’t clean my house. Thank you, thank you for taking the time to share pictures of your beautiful new home. Please keep us posted as you go along. I am so excited. Let me know the colors you will be using in you sun room. I have an idea. :0) When you get ready to set up your sewing room I will show you a design & cutting table that Dennis made for me. It also doubles for a big ironing pad. I only have about $100 dollars in it. I love it.

  6. Fantastic kitchen! Great light. No, you’re not crazy for thoroughly cleaning the house. Easier now then after the furniture is placed.

  8. I love your new home, especially all the windows and wooden floors! It definitely takes forever and a day to unpack and settle in, but before you know it you’ll be finished. Just do what you can, but save time to relax and breath.

  10. It’s the little things that do it….. pieces of our treasures…. books… art supplies and fabric. Those make it feel more like home than unpacking clothes and linens….

  11. Thank you! We are totally smitten. And you are so right about no tv in the sunroom. We’ve arranged the furniture to have the outside be the view…. birds and trees. It is so tranquil!

  12. ps ~ I would love to know what you think would be a good sunroom color. I’m still not sure…..
AND I can’t wait to hear more about the table. You’ll have to email me details. I do have my fabric unpacked but it will be a little bit still before I get studio space set up….
